American Military Burial Flag. |
Description |
American Military Burial Flag. John Murray, Navy. Message from family: John Murray enlisted in the Navy August 28, 1936 at 17 years old. He wished to attend Annapolis; he was unable to for minor medical reasons. That didn't keep him from enlisting with the goal of becoming an officer. He was always goal oriented. He was commissioned as an Ensign during the war in 1943 when he was stationed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Following the war, he was stationed in South Carolina, Monterey, CA attending General Line School; Manila, Philippine Islands, as a Foreign Service Officer serving as Naval Attache; and Naval Intelligence Officer, Istanbul, Turkey. He retired in 1962 to Arizona saying he had "enough water and wished to be far away from it." During his Naval Career he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Atlantic Theatre Medal, Pacific Theatre Medal, European Theatre Medal, European Occupation Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal and Pearl Harbor Medal. John Murray requested to be buried at sea. The Navy granted this wish. |
